Surgical Services

At North Queensland Paediatric Surgery, we provide specialist surgical care for babies, infants, children and adolescents throughout Mackay and North Queensland. We understand that surgery can be a stressful experience for families, and we are committed to providing compassionate, family-centred care from consultation through to recovery.

Dr Brend is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI) in Paediatric Surgery and offers assessment, diagnosis and management of a wide range of paediatric surgical conditions.

General Paediatric Surgery

We provide consultation and treatment for common childhood surgical conditions, including:

  • Inguinal hernias

  • Umbilical hernias

  • Hydroceles

  • Undescended testes

  • Retractile testes

  • Circumcision and foreskin conditions

  • Skin lesions and lumps

  • Head and neck conditions including thyroglossal and branchial remnants, tongue tie, pre-auricular tags and sinuses

Skin and Soft Tissue Conditions

We offer surgical management of a variety of skin and soft tissue concerns, including:

 

  • Birthmarks and vascular anomalies

  • Enlarged lymph nodes requiring assessment

  • Ingrown Toenails

  • Scar management including scar revision and laser treatment

  • Pigmented skin lesions

  • Soft tissue masses including lipomas

  • Subcutaneous lesions including Pilomatrixomas

  • Epidermoid and Sebaceous cysts

  • Simple accessory digits not involving joints

Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopic) Surgery and Upper GI Endoscopy

Where appropriate, minimally invasive techniques may be used to reduce pain, minimise scarring and support a quicker recovery.

Procedures include:

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy

  • Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair

  • Laparoscopy for impalpable testis

  • Laparoscopic fundoplication

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

  • Diagnostic or Interventional Upper GI Endoscopy
  • Other minimally invasive procedures tailored to your child's condition
Chest Wall & Thoracic Conditions

Assessment and management of chest wall abnormalities, including:

  • Pectus excavatum (sunken chest)

  • Pectus carinatum (protruding chest)

  • Congenital Lung Malformations

  • Spontaneous Pneumothorax

  • Hyperhidrosis (excess sweating)

Treatment options will be discussed based on your child's age, symptoms and individual circumstances.

Neonatal Surgery and Antenatal Counselling

Dr Brend has particular expertise and interest  in the surgical care of newborn infants, including the assessment and management of conditions identified before or shortly after birth. He is happy to provide antenatal counselling to expectant mothers and their partners for antenatally suspected conditions causing concern. Care is provided in close collaboration with neonatal and paediatric teams.

Acute Paediatric Surgical Conditions

Timely assessment and management of urgent surgical presentations, including:

  • Suspected appendicitis

  • Acute scrotal pain

  • Abscesses requiring drainage

  • Management of lacerations

  • Ingested foreign bodies

Referrals

A referral from your General Practitioner, Paediatrician or another Specialist is required for consultation and allows access to applicable Medicare rebates.
